I would like to spend a couple of weeks sightseeing Argentina & Chile, starting in Buenos Aires (possibly Montevideo) and ending the trip in Santiago. In between the two, I would like to visit the wine or the lake region, perhaps Patagonia.
1. Is train travel practical or comfortable for the whole journey? If not, I can travel some sections by bus as well.
2. What's the best area to cross from Argentina into Chile?
3. Are there sleeper trains for longer sections of the trip?
4. Where can I research prices and timetable, and/or buy tickets online?
5. Will I avoid the $150 arrival tax on the US citizens by starting the journey in Montevideo, then crossing into BA by a ferry?
Thanks in advance for any travel tips!
@polly: I am open to replace trains with buses, if the latter are more comfortable. I'd still like to get an idea of routes and fares before leaving home.
I understand the tax (aka "Reciprocity Fee") is only imposed on arrivals at the EZE airport --

Right now one dollar equals 3.49 pesos, but what does that actually mean? During the fall of 2009 I am going to be studying in BA and want to begin planning finances. So, what do some of the following things or anything else actually cost in pesos?
Subway ticket
Cab ride
Lunch/Dinner
Beer/Wine
Typical night out
Traveling expenses (Patagonia, Iguazu, Peru, Uraguay, Mendoza)
Other expenses
One reason that I chose Argentina over Spain was to have the financial ability to do almost anything that I want. I'm going to be living there for 4.5 months, how much money do you think I should have available. (I will be living with a host family btw) Thanks for reading, I know its a long question.
I do realize that the peso is worth the same all throughout the country. Just trying to find out what it can actually buy you...

i have 13 days from the time i touchdown to the time i'm back in the air. i'm 21 and going with 3 close friends to visit a friend who is studying in valpo and living in vina del mar. my plan is 3 days in SANTIAGO to see:
Cerro San Cristobal (in Parque Metropolitano)
Plaza de Armas (main plaza, including national cathedral)
Cerro Santa Lucia (park including El Castillo Hidalgo)
La Moneda Palace (presidential palace)
then off to PUCON (789 kilometers south of Santiago) and:
Volcan Villarrica (climb it for 30000 CLP, including gear and transportation)
Huerquehue National Park (hike past waterfalls and brooks)
then back up to santiago, doing a day of wine country somewhere in the process, and then over to valpo and vina to see my friend. we only have 2 weeks, we won't have the time to go to patagonia, but i was looking for other things to potentially see (lake district, Chiloe, etc). anyone have any ideas or information? preferably someone who's been there. thanks a lot.
