Catamarca Overview
On the northwest corner of
Argentina lies the province of Catamarca. Catamarca is just becoming known for its wine making, as it is a fairly new endevour for the area. The grapes from decades ago were largely used for raisins, however this is changing. Part of the success from the surrounding wine regions including
Salta,
La Rioja, and
Cordoba have surely influenced Catamarca's growing wine industry.
Sitting around 1500 meters at the base of the Andes, Catamarca has some ideal conditions for wine making. The soil is dry and sandy, and the weather is warm. Within Catamarca are two regions with their micro-climate s that give their own character and include
Fiambala and
Tinogasta.
Cabernet Sauvignon as well as
Syrah are some of the varietals that do well for the area.
